What Are The Cracking Or Popping Sounds During An Adjustment?

If you’ve ever had a chiropractic adjustment or even watched one online, you’ve probably heard a distinct popping or cracking sound. Many patients ask us what causes those sounds and whether they’re signs that something has “snapped” back into place. The truth is far less scary and actually pretty fascinating.

The science behind the adjustment cracking sounds

Let us assure you right off the bat: that cracking sound you hear during an adjustment is entirely normal and, in most cases, harmless. It’s called cavitation, which happens when gas bubbles within your joints are released.

Our joints, especially the spine, are surrounded by fluid that helps everything move smoothly. This fluid contains dissolved gases, such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide. When we perform an adjustment and apply a quick, targeted force to a joint, the pressure within that joint changes. That sudden change can cause gas bubbles to form and quickly collapse or release, creating that popping sound.

Think of it like opening a soda can. That hiss you hear? It’s the same basic principle, with pressure changes releasing gas. It’s also very similar to the sound you hear when cracking your knuckles.

You may have heard the old wives’ tale that cracking your knuckles leads to joint damage. However, it’s a harmless habit and not a cause of arthritis. That said, we do advise moderation. Habitual or excessive popping, especially if done forcefully, can lead to minor ligament laxity over time, which could affect joint stability.  But for most people, occasional popping is nothing to worry about and won’t result in long-term health issues.

As always, if you have concerns about joint health or mobility, it’s best to consult a chiropractor to ensure everything is functioning correctly. The popping noise itself isn’t what makes the adjustment effective. A successful alignment can occur without any sound at all. What matters is the mobility and function of the joint, not whether it makes a dramatic noise.

What if you don’t hear the crack?

Not everyone will hear or feel a pop during their chiropractic adjustments. And that’s okay. Some chiropractic techniques are much gentler and don’t cause cavitation.  Others might target joints that simply don’t release gas at that moment. The absence of sound doesn’t mean the adjustment didn’t work. Chiropractic care is about improving function and reducing discomfort, not producing dramatic sound effects.

If anything ever feels uncomfortable during an adjustment, speak up. We work with your comfort level and tailor techniques to your body’s needs. Communication is key, and options such as gentle mobilizations, drop tables, or instrument-assisted adjustments are always key for patients who prefer a quieter or softer touch.

In short, the cracking or popping sound you hear during an adjustment is just your body responding to changes in pressure, not a sign of anything going wrong. Most patients find it oddly satisfying, and many even feel immediate relief afterward.

Dr. Shawn is absolutely amazing. Being an athlete himself, we can relate to my past sports injuries and how they are still affecting me. I can feel the difference when I take a break from seeing him so his treatments seem to be effective. Regular adjustments keep the pain to a minimum and often times completely gone. I highly recommend Elite Chiropractic. Thanks Doc.
