What Is a Subluxation & How Does It Affect The Body?

As a chiropractor, I often remind patients that proper health isn’t just the absence of pain but the body functioning at its highest potential. And that starts with the spine and nervous system. Every movement, breath, heartbeat, and internal process relies on clear communication between the brain and body, carried through the spinal cord. When the spine is misaligned, even slightly, it can interfere with that communication, and that’s where vertebral subluxation comes in.

A vertebral subluxation is a misalignment or restricted motion in the spine that disrupts nerve function. It might not always cause immediate pain, which is why so many people live with subluxations unknowingly. Though painful, like a condition like sciatica, subluxations are actually a quite different condition, though they can be related. The following post will examine what causes subluxations, how they affect health, and why early detection is essential. The story of true wellness begins with the spine, and understanding subluxation is the first chapter.

What Is a Subluxation?

Dr. Shaun speaking to a patient and using an artificial spine to show her what is causing her pain.

Clinically speaking, a subluxation refers to a misalignment or abnormal movement of a vertebra that disrupts normal joint biomechanics and interferes with neural communication. This dysfunction may not always be visible to the untrained eye, but its impact on health can be profound. Imaging studies like X-rays or motion palpation assessments help identify structural or functional imbalances.

More than just a structural issue, subluxations are neurologically significant. The spinal column contains and shields the spinal cord, the vital communication conduit between the brain and body. When a vertebra is misaligned, it can irritate or compress nearby spinal nerves, leading to distorted nerve signaling. Over time, this can compromise the function of the tissues and organs that those nerves supply.

Causes and Consequences of Subluxations

Subluxations develop from a range of factors, including poor posture, trauma, repetitive stress, emotional tension, and even sedentary behavior. Unfortunately, many individuals live with undetected subluxations for years, only becoming aware of them once symptoms such as chronic pain, restricted mobility, or systemic issues arise.

Common manifestations of subluxations include:

  • Chronic back or neck discomfort
  • Recurring headaches or migraines
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the extremities
  • Digestive disturbances
  • Fatigue or lowered immune resilience

Left uncorrected, subluxations may lead to compensatory changes in surrounding muscles and joints, eventually contributing to degenerative changes and broader health concerns.

How Chiropractic Care Helps Subluxations

Chiropractors are specially trained to pinpoint and correct subluxations through precise, controlled spinal adjustments. These noninvasive interventions correct spinal misalignment and support the body’s capacity to heal holistically.

Chiropractic care isn’t just about pain relief. It’s about keeping your whole body working in optimal condition over the long haul. Many of our patients incorporate routine chiropractic adjustments into their wellness plans to maintain alignment.

If you suspect you may be living with undiagnosed subluxations, I encourage you to schedule an evaluation. Early intervention is key to restoring balance and unlocking your body’s full potential.

Dr. Shawn is absolutely amazing. Being an athlete himself, we can relate to my past sports injuries and how they are still affecting me. I can feel the difference when I take a break from seeing him so his treatments seem to be effective. Regular adjustments keep the pain to a minimum and often times completely gone. I highly recommend Elite Chiropractic. Thanks Doc.
